A Bristol boy was killed when he chased a dog onto the road and was struck by a car west of Bristol at 4:06 p.m. Sunday.

Craig Brubaker, three-year-old son of Henry and Diana L. (Mabie) Brubaker, 20223 C.R. 6, Bristol, was Elkhart County's 20th traffic victim this year.

Lewis W. Myers, 24, Middlebury, driver involved in the accident, braked and swerved his 1972 Chevrolet in an attempt to avoid hitting the child, according to Sheriff's Ptl. Lamar Haney, who investigated the accident with Sheriff's Sgt. Walker E. Miller, Ptl. Dean Neterer and state troopers George Mains and Melvin Eash.

The fatal accident, which was the fourth one tis year involving a child, occurred on C.R. 6, about seven-tenths of a mile west of C.R. 21

Mother in Hospital

The Brubaker boy and his sister, Yolanda, were playing in a yard of neighbors near the Brubaker home. The children had been left with neighbors while Brubaker took his wife to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of a laceration sustained in an accident at home. She was in surgery when the accident involving her son occurred.

The boy, who was chasing a dog, ran from the south side of the road into the path of the car driven by Myers, according to witnesses. Myers braked and swerved his auto in an attempt to avoid the child.

The Brubaker boy suffered fractures of the skull and neck and multiple lacerations, according to information given investigating officers.

Bristol policeman Gary Ryman was first officer at the scene of the accident.

Craig was born in Elkhart, March 17, 1974. Surviving with the parents and sister are grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Orvan Mabie, Bristol.

Friends will be received at the Blocker-Harris Fifth Street Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ronald D. DeYoung, pastor of the Christian Reformed Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Bristol.

It was the eighth traffic death in Elkhart County this month and raised this year's traffic toll to 20, compared to 18 at this time last year.
