Birth Parents: Belle Simpson Farley and Frank Stephen Farley

Steve passed unto God's Heavenly Kingdom on September 12, 2011. He was born in Vernon, Texas on November 26, 1919 to Belle Simpson Farley and Frank Stephen Farley as the youngest of seven children. After his parents early demise he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Jessie Pearl Carter and Roy I. Carter and was brought up in Wichita Falls, Texas. He attended Texas A&M Unversity before he was called to active duty in the United States Army in 1941. As one of our Greatest Generation, Steve served with valor and distinction as Captain of the "A" Battery of the 121 Infantry Division, 56th Field Artillery Battalion of the 8th Infantry Division. His Battalion took part in the Normand, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns, and received a Presidential Unit Citation for action in the Hurtgen Forest. He was awarded the Silver Star and the French Croix de Guerre for gallantry in action in France. He was also awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars. He retired from military service after WWII with the rank of Major. He then returned to Texas A&M University and graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in Petroleum Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in the "Fightin' Texas Aggie" class of 1941. He began his career with Texas Pacific Coal and Oil Company as a District Engineer and advanced to the Chief Petroleum Engineer and Assistant Production Manager. He then had an association with J.D. Wrather, Jr. and the Wrather Development Corporation as the Production Manager and Chief Engineer before establishing Carter-Langham, Incorporated, an oil and gas exploration company with his nephew James T. Langham, Jr. In addition to several professional organizations, he enjoyed memberships in the Northwood Club, the Park City Club, the Dallas Museum of Art and several dance clubs. He was a charter member of Park Cities Presbyterian Church. Steve was predeceased by his beloved son, Stephen Roy Carter, his beloved sister with whom he grew up, Anna Belle Farley Langham, four older brothers and another sister. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Grace Gayden Carter; his daughter, Christina Gayden Carter; his son Julian Gayden Carter and his wife Cindy; five grandchildren, Jennings Bond Carter and his wife Erin, Stephen James Carter, Alicia Louise Carter, John Gayden Carter and Caroline Carter Marrs and her husband John; and two great grandchildren, Harrison Bond Carter and Spencer James Carter. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. Steve was a gallant Christian gentleman, a steadfast patriot and a devoted family man who epitomized integrity in every area of his life. He was deeply loved and admired by his family and his friends. The memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, September 16th in the chapel at Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Home. A private family burial will be held prior to the service.
