Lt. Col. (Ret.) Sylvia M. Evans, 72, of 901 North West "B" Street, Bentonville, died Saturday morning in Bates Hospital, Bentonville.

She was born March 6, 1902, near Sedalia, Ark., (now part of Beaver Lake), the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Evans, early Northwest Arkansas pioneers.

She attended school in Bentonville and after graduation taught in the Shady Grove (Carroll County) School for five years.

She was a graduate of the Levi Memorial Hospital Training Program in Hot Springs, and applied for a career as an Army nurse in 1928.

She spent seven years in Fort Sam Houston Army Hospital, and three years in the Philippine Islands, and was stationed in West Point, New York, with the U.S. Military Academy Hospital.

She was appointed chief nurse at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, in Aberdeen, Md. While stationed there the Nurses Crops became a part of the regular Army, and starting as a first lieutenant, she went to England in World War II, as a Major.

After the war she spent five years in Walter Reed Army Hospital, in Washington, D.C. and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

She was next stationed in Valley Forge Army Hospital in Valley Forge, Pa., and retired in May of 1955 on a disability. At the time of retirement she was the third highest ranking woman in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps.

After living one year in California, she and her husband moved to Bentonville.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd A. Evans, of the home, a brother, Lawton Evans, of Rt. 5, Rogers; two sisters, Mrs. Zella Van Hook, of Rogers, and Mrs. Velva McCullough, of Bentonville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in the burns Funeral Chapel, Bentonville, conducted by the Rev. Cecil Garrison, with burial in the Rambo cemetery east of Rogers.

Gravesite Details

Family history has it that Lloyd changed his name from Peterson to Evans because his wife had the higher rank in service when they got married. He was a Captain and she was a Lt Colonel.
