Gary L. Koons, 47, of Bucyrus, died Saturday, December 19,2009 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio unexpectedly after a sudden illness.
Born August 9, 1962 in Bucyrus, he was the son of Howard A. and Bonnie J. (Alheim) Koons of Bucyrus. He married Mary B. (Springer) Koons on August 2, 1986 and she survives.

Gary attended First Church of the Nazarene in Bucyrus, and graduated from Colonel Crawford High School in 1980,North Central Technical College with a degree in Criminal Justice, McDonalds Hamburger Univesity in Chicago, Mt Vernon Nazarene College with A. B.S. in Business Adminstration and Ohio Univesity College of Education with a Masters in Education.

Gary served manmy years in the food industry managing restaurants including, McDonalds, Ponderosa, Denny's and Bucks. He worked as a sales representative for the Bissman Distributing Company in Mansfield and also worked at Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby. He worked for seven years as Business Manager for the Ashland City Schools and was presently Chief Operations Officer at TRECA in Marion the past five years.

He is a Licensed City School Business Manager and Tresurer and was working towards his school superintendent license. He presently was serving on the Col.Crawford Board of Education and was just elected to his second term. He served as a consultant, taught leadership and trained employees in the Baldridge Leadership Concept and graduated from Ohio Association of School Business Officials Leadership Academy and served on the Ohio School Plans Insurance Board. Gary served on Galion Community Center YMCA Board of Dirctors, was an adjunct professor at Mt.Vernon Nazarene College, coached various youth basketball and baseball teams, has refereed for middle school basketball, taught Sunday school at St Paul United Methodist Church where he sang as an original member of the New Creation Contemporary Music Group.

Gary was an avid "bargin hunter and junk collector" and enjoyed refurbishing used furniture and wood working. First and foremost he enjoyed raising his sons and their exclusive "The Boys Club" and participating in their activities including 4-H, athletics, music and academics. His family and friends came before everything and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He and his family enjoyed camping, boating, fishing and family activities. He also enjoyed playhing basketball, swimming, working out and playing cards. His light hearted teasing, kidding and telling jokes will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by two sons, Adam T. Koons of Bowling Green and Alex T. Koons at home; and one brother and sister: Stephen A. and Karen Koons of Allen, Texas, one sister and brother in law, Karen and Rob Grassick of Ontario; mother and father in-law, Dale and Betty Springer of New Washington and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two infant sisters.

Friends may call from 2-5 and 6-8 Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at First Church of the Nazarene, 2165 SR 4 South, Bucyrus, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 with Rev. Ray LaSalle officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Col.Crawford Schools through the Richardson-Davis Funeral Home, 218 S. Market St.,Galion,Ohio 44833.
