Daughter of Adam Gaston Cromer and Annetta Antoinette Johnson. Mattie and her twin sister, Hattie, were only 6 years old when their mother died. Mattie lived with relatives and neighbors working on various farms until she was 22. In 1912, Mattie married Silas Lamon Eaton in Stokes County, NC. Mattie was the mother of 13 children, 1 set of twins that were stillborn. She was a hard worker and an excellent cook. Always wore an apron around the house. A very strong lady inside and out. She enjoyed life and loved to laugh in her rocking chair. Her hair was very long and she braided it daily into a bun. She died 2 days after her 90th Birthday in a nursing home.
