Myrtle was the daughter of James Hardy Smith and Ida Tabitha Dettenheim Smith. She was born in the Beech Grove Community near Spearsville, Union Parish, Louisiana. On 16 February 1928, she married Walter Grady Jones, and they had one child Hannah Myrtle Jones Duffy Gulsvig French (1929-2006).

On 24 March 1934, Myrtle and Ramon "Ray" Veles were married, and they had three children.
