James William Truluck, Jr. FLORENCE –

James William Truluck, Jr., Florence, SC, died Friday, May 21, 2010, at his residence. Bill served with the 24th Infantry Division in the Pacific where he was a unit commander.

He made six amphibious landings in New Guinea and throughout The Philippines.

He was decorated with the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action and received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster.

Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Campbell Truluck, and is survived by his wife, Peggy Taylor Palles Truluck,

James William Truluck, Jr., died Friday, May 21, 2010, at his residence after an illness.

He was born September 6, 1919, a son of Rev. J. W. Truluck and Raeford Stroud Truluck of Olanta, SC.

He graduated from Lamar High School and then from Clemson University in 1940. Bill lettered in baseball and was co-captain of the baseball team.

He later played in the Palmetto State League in Kingstree, SC. After graduating from Clemson, Bill taught school at Chesterfield High School and coached baseball.

Bill was called into service in February 1942, and served with the 24th Infantry Division in the Pacific where he was a unit com-mander.

He made six amphibious landings in New Guinea and throughout The Philippines.

He was decorated with the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action and received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for heroism and meritorious service against the Japanese.

Bill was discharged as a captain in the Infantry after over forty months overseas. After serving his tour of duty, he was appointed assistant county agent in Chesterfield County.

In 1947, he became a salesman for the National Cash Register Company in Columbia and later managed the Florence office. He retired from NCR in 1962 after sixteen years of service, and returned to Florence where he founded LitCo Real Estate Company.

Bill was a Sunday school teacher at Ebenezer Baptist, First Baptist and Calvary Baptist Churches. He was a member of the church choir at Calvary Baptist Church.

At the time of his death, he was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a member of the Christian Family Sunday School Class. He was active in the SPEBSDSA Florence Barbershop Harmony chorus for many years and sang lead in several quartets. Bill was an active member of IPTAY and the Clemson Lettermen's Club.

He was also a member of the V.F.W. and Disabled Veterans Association.

Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Campbell Truluck.

He is survived by his daughter, Betty Gail Truluck Jones (Johnny) of Gainesville, GA, and his son, James William Truluck, III, (Deb) of Flor-ence.

He has two grandchildren, Kelly Jones Black of Sewanee, TN, and John Fant Jones, III, of Staunton, VA, and four great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his wife, Peggy Taylor Palles Truluck, her children and grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 23, 2010, in Central United Methodist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will re-ceive friends immediately following the service in the church commons area. A private family burial with military honors will be in Florence Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 87, Florence, SC 29503.
