Joseph Rice's birth information doesn't vary wildly among different records, but it does vary. His name first appeared on the 1870 census, where he was born "about 1869." The same information was present on the 1880 census. His sister, Matilda Emeline Rice, was listed on both of those censuses as being two years older than Joseph. The 1900 census stated that Joseph was born in August, 1868. By 1910, it was back to "about 1869." In 1920 the birth year was listed as 1865; in 1930, the year was 1867; in 1940, the year was 1868. The death certificate gave the birth information as August 15, 1865, and was provided by a son, John Rice. The tombstone is engraved with the year 1866, so that's the date used for this memorial. A findagrave member pointed out that his sister, Matilda, was listed as having been born in December, 1866. Since the two birth dates are only four months apart, almost certainly one of them is in error. I've presented what the various records indicate and hope this information will be helpful.
