DANIEL ARTHUR BAKER
(September 21, 1868 - August 12, 1952)
Daniel Arthur Baker/Arthur Cornelius Baker & Susan (Dickerson) Baker

Daniel Arthur Baker was born on September 21, 1868 in Monroe, Union County, North Carolina.

Sometime between 1887 and 1894, Daniel Arthur Baker, his parents and all of them except his oldest sister moved to Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas. His oldest sister, Mary had already married and stayed in North Carolina.

Daniel Arthur married Sallie Laverna Pettit on September 12, 1893 in Wills Point, TX.

Daniel's parents were Arthur Cornelius Baker and Susan (Dickerson) Baker (Wheelock Cemetery, Millerton, McCurtain County, Oklahoma).

Daniel Arthur and Sallie Laverna had eight (8) children who were Oscar Hobson Baker, Ola Myrtle (Baker) Brassfield, Christine Effie "Tina" (Baker) Seymour, Emmitt Lafayette Baker, Luther Houston "Lute" Baker, Homer Cornelius "Bake" Baker, Etha Etheldred "Sis" (Baker) Donaldson and Essie Vertel (Baker) Wilds. They were all buried in Valliant Cemetery, McCurtain County, OK except Ola Myrtle Brassfield who was buried in California...Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield, Kern County, California.

DANIEL A. BAKER and his brothers and sisters were born in Monroe, Union County, North Carolina. All of them were Mary (Baker) Plyler-July 6, 1867-August 21,1944 (had already married and stayed in Monroe, NC), Naomi Abigail (Baker) Lucus-February 8, 1872-July, 1903 (died in Texas), Henrietta Baker, born in 1878 (died very young with Typhoid Fever), George Baker-born October 26, 1876, John Baker-born May 11, 1880 and Eva Baker-born October 11, 1887 (died very young with Typhoid Fever)

Then, about 1906, Arthur Cornelius & Susan (Dickerson) Baker, Daniel Arthur & Sallie Laverna (Pettit) Baker & family, John and Lydia Baker & family,George & Letha Baker & family, a family of Whitakers and a few other families forded Red River from Texas, moving to Oklahoma. Luther "Lute" Baker was only 3 or 4 years old, and Homer "Bake" Baker was only 1 or 2 years old. It was right in the middle of Winter, and the story was that both Arthur Cornelius Baker and Daniel Arthur Baker had mustaches and beards that got wet and frozen. They both had icicles hanging from their faces.

After they had crossed over Red River from Texas with their animals and several covered wagons, they set up camp in Oklahoma. To get warm, they built a bonfire, and they placed logs around the fire on which to lay their bridles so that the bridles could dry out. During the night, some of the logs caught fire and burned up some of their bridles. A mare pulling one of the covered wagons had a colt during the night, and that held them up for a several hours. They had tied the mare to a tree and the rope froze around the tree. George Baker's daughter, Eva (Baker) Smith told me that her dad said that he had a dog named "Old Bess," and it was so cold that night that he thought they would have frozen to death if it had not been for "Old Bess" sleeping next to them and keeping their feet warm.

It must have taken them a long time to get to Ardmore, Oklahoma with their animals and covered wagons. A few of them moved to other places in Southern Oklahoma, but Arthur Cornelius & Susan Baker's and Daniel Arthur & Sallie (Pettit) Baker's family moved to Ardmore. D. A. and Sallie Baker's last two children were born while they were living in Ardmore...Ethedred "Sis" (Baker) Donaldson and Essie (Baker) Wilds.

They moved to Boswell, OK for a short time. In about 1912, Daniel Arthur's family moved down to the Mt. Zion Community, just southeast of Valliant, McCurtain County, OK. Emmitt Baker stated that he thought it took them about two (2) weeks to get there. Why they first moved to Wills Point,Texas, second moved to Ardmore, OK, third moved to Boswell, OK and then to McCurtain County?...I don't know, but I'm quite sure that every move probably had something to do with getting work for the men.

Daniel Arthur Baker was on the Mt. Zion School Board for thirty-eight (38) years.

Daniel Arthur Baker passed away August 14, 1952 near Valliant, OK. Both he and his wife, Sallie (Pettit) Baker were buried at Valliant Cemetery, Valliant, McCurtain County, OK (Just inside the drive-through gate on west side). There is a gravestone, and it was purchased in 1986 by their grandchildren.

At the time of his death, his obituary listed 36 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The pall bearers for D. A. Baker's funeral were his grandsons, Oscar Brassfield, Arnold Baker, Arland Baker, Bob Donaldson, Woodward Baker and Sonny Baker.
