Joseph was born to Martin and Josephine Gerich. Joseph's spelling of his name before coming to America was "Josef Gerich". Joseph married Susanna Laschinger on 26 June 1877 in Cook Co., Illinois. They lived a short time in Minneapolis, Minnesota before moving back to Chicago around 1900. Joseph and Susanna had seven children and they instilled in their children, especially their daughters, a lust for life. They encouraged them to travel, learn many languages and see the world. They were all well educated and had a love for knowledge. The daughters married later in life because of this love of travel. They usually traveled together.

Joseph M. Gerig died 15 January 1935. Beloved husband of the Late Susanna L. Laschinger 1855-1919, they were married in 1877. Fond Father of Edward, Mayme (Hausner), Carrie (Kelroy), Ethel (Pennoch) and Pauline (Loeb). Funeral Friday 9:30 a.m. from funeral home at 6140 N. Ashland Ave. at Foster, to the Church of St. Gregory, Longbeach 5147. Predeceased by their son William "Willie" C. Gerig 1895-1905.
