Spring and summer of 1951 were spent near Manhattan, MT; her husband was employed at the Harry Brainard ranch. In the fall they moved to Butte, MT where both were employed at Hansen Packing Company. Spring of 1952 found them back in the Gallatin Valley, doing ranch work and farm work for Vanc Bright. Autumn of 1952 found them near Galen, MT, Bob working for Mt. Haggen Livestock Co, and Mardella working at the State Sanatorium in Galen. Green grass brought them back to the Gallatin Valley in spring of 1953, this time to stay and raise their family. Mardella was an "at home mother", involved in her children's school and 4-H activities and in work on their ranch south of Bozeman. In 1969, she went back to the "work" world at MSU, first working part-time and then full-time, nine or ten months each year, and retiring in 1989. Summers were spent at home with her girls and helping with the ranch work.
Mardella was a member of the United Methodist Church and a Home Extension Club. She was a 4-H Leader for eighteen years, a volunteer at the Help Center, worked with multiple sclerosis victims, and belonged to the Do-Ci-Do Square Dance Club until she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1987.
She enjoyed singing, dancing, embroidery and counted cross stitch, reading and paying pinochle. Family and home were always her greatest love and her first priority. She and Bob traveled to Mexico, Vancouver, British Columbia, and took an Alaskan cruise, besides traveling to visit children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; daughters, Lynette Petrau of Libby, MT, Charlotte Terry and husband, Kent, of Gillette, WY, and grandson, Chad, of Baltimore, MD, Jennifer Saunders and husband, Fred, of Grass Range, grandson, JT, of Norris, and granddaughter, Kinze, of Lewistown, brother, Calvin ,of Lynwood, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
