Lee's parents were James Thomas Barnhill and Eliza Jane. Eliza was married twice. She married Thomas Jefferson "T J" Hensley on Oct 23, 1887 in Greeneville, Greene County , Tennessee.

Lee Barnhill married Susie Lee Dunn on Nov 5, 1901 in Bell County, Texas.

The 1910 US Census listed him as Lee Barnhill (30) living in Brownwood, Texas with his wife Susie L Barnhill (30) and 3 daughters: Myrtle B Barnhill (7), Mary E Barnhill (4) and Alice L Barnhill (2). Lee was employed as a Locomotive Fireman.

When Lee completed his World War I Draft Registration card on Sep 11, 1918 in Brownwood, Texas, he listed his occupation as RR Engr for the G, C & S F Ry (Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway). He was described as of Medium Height and Build, with Brown eyes and Black hair.

The 1920 US Census listed him as Lee Barnhill (40), still living in Brownwood, Texas with his wife Susie Lee Barnhill (39) and 5 children: Mary Barnhill (13), Alice Barnhill (12), Jessie Lee Barnhill (7), Lucile Barnhill (4) and J T Barnhill (2). Lee's occupation was Railroad Locomotive Engineer.

The 1930 US Census listed him as Lee Barnhill (50), now living in San Diego, San Diego County, California with his wife Susie Lee Barnhill (49) and 6 children: Mary E Anderson (24), Alice L Barnhill (22), Jess Barnhill (17), S Lucille Barnhill (14), John T Barnhill (13) and Edna E Barnhill (7). Lee was employed as a Stationary Engineer for the City Water Dept.

By the 1940 US Census, Lee Barnhill (60) and Susie Barnhill (59) were still living in San Diego, San Diego County, California and only had 2 children still living at home with them: John Barnhill (23) and Edna Barnhill (17). Lee was employed as a Mechanic working for the government.

Both of their sons, Jesse and John, enlisted during World War II. Jesse Lee Barnhill (22), b. Dec 12, 1912 in Brownwood, Texas, married Beulah E Tilden (22) on Apr 24, 1934 in Yuma, Arizona. They had a son, William Lee Barnhill. Jesse enlisted in the US Navy and was serving as a Chief Radioman when he was killed in action on May 30, 1945, possibly during the Battle of Okinawa, as Jesse was originally buried on the Japanese island of Ie Shima.

John Thomas Barnhill, b. Jan 18, 1917 in Brownwood, Texas, enlisted in the US Army on Mar 30, 1943 and served until Feb 20, 1946. He died Oct 5, 1985.

Lee Barnhill

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery for Lee Barnhill, 91, 3816 Richmond St., who died Wednesday in a hospital.
A native of Texas, he had lived in San Diego for 47 years.
Barnhill was a member of the United Spanish-American War Veterans and Al Bahr Shrine. He retired from employment at North Island Naval Air Station in 1945 and was the first president of the National Association of Retired Civil Employees in San Diego.
He is survived by four daughters, including Mrs. Lucille Archibald of San Diego and Mrs. Edna Fares of La Mesa; a son, and 14 grandchildren.
