Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Reuben Burris and Patron Bryant Johnson. He was a World War II Army veteran of the Armored Tank Division, retired from Thurston Motor Lines, and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Pelzer.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was wounded in action in France on November 12, 1944.
