Frederick Maurice Smith, 64, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011, in his home in Cordova, TN. He was born January 5, 1947, in Thomaston, GA, to James H. and Christine (Garrett) Smith.

He graduated from Elkton High School in Elkton, VA, in 1965 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the Virginia Military Institute in 1969. He served in the United States Army, Field Artillery, for 10 years, including a tour in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

After the Army, Fred worked for 20 years as a salesman and sales manager for several paper companies, including Manville, Westvaco, International Paper and Memphis-based Milton Sternberger Company.

Fred had a lifelong passion for sports. He played football in high school and college. Later he was a dedicated soccer coach, referee and referee assessor and helped coach the Bickford Giants youth baseball. Fred was a past vice president of Optimist International. Fred never met a stranger. He loved people and animals. He never saw a person he did not talk to, or a dog he did not befriend.

Fred leaves his devoted wife, Linda; and sons, Jeremy Smith of Knoxville and G. Shayne Smith of Germantown; daughter-in-law, Vera; and two granddaughters, Vivian and Elizabeth.

The family will receive friends and family Friday, August 26, from 5-7 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 27, at Memphis Funeral Home.

The family requests that instead of flowers a donation be made to Page Robbins Adult Daycare, 1161 S. Houston Levee Road, Collierville, TN 38017 or to another charity of your choice.
