Chester A. Crago, 85, of Petoskey, died May 16, 1994, at Sun Grove Care Center in Peoria,Arizona.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, may 21, at the United Methodist Church in Petoskey with Rev. Don Merrill officiating. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey.
Mr. Crago was born June 23,1908, in Petoskey, the son of Archibald and Mary Winters Crago. He grew up and attended school in Petoskey, graduated from Petoskey High School. He also attended Hillsdale College.
On April 20, 1929, he married Maybelle Garland in Petoskey. She preceded him in death on May 28, 1990.
After attending Hillsdale College, Mr. Crago went into the grocery business with his father. The family owned and operated Crago Grocery Store.
Mr. Crago served as mayor of Petoskey from 1954-1956.
He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
He was a charter member of the Lions Club. He was also a member of the Masons, as well as the Petoskey-Bay View Country Club and the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Margie Lou Stapleton of Dunigan, Calif., Ruth Faunce and her husband Jim, of Petoskey, and Mary Lorenz and her husband, Bob, of Petoskey; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Happy Crow, of Petoskey; two nieces, Patsy Carlsson of Connecticut, and Anthea Healey of Petoskey. In addition to his wife, Mr. Crago was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Ford, and by one sister, Ruth.
The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church . Envelopes for that purpose are available at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey where visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 20,1994.
