Scientist revered as the father of Russian cosmonautics. Inspired originally by the works of Jules Verne, he dedicated himself to the study of space and rocketry, as well as to the development of 'Cosmic Philosophy'. He lived and taught for forty years in Kaluga, and when his dreams became a reality, partly through the Soviet Space programme, which conformed in many ways with his prophecies. The Russian Space Museum was established in Kaluga as a tribute to him, and he is buried nearby.
