Organist and composer. Born Félix-Alexandre Guilmant, he was first instructed in piano and organ by his father and formally from Jaak-Nicolaas Lemmens in Brussels. He began his career as organist at the Church of Saint Joseph and Maître de Chapelle of the Church of Saint Nicholas Church in Boulogne. In 1868, he was one of the organists who played the inaugural concert of the new organ in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. He was the organist at Église de la Sainte-Trinité Catholic Church in Paris from 1871 to 1901. His recitals were performed throughout Europe, Canada and the United States where he was the featured organist on the St. Louis Exposition organ in 1904. He composed ninety-four opus numbers and eight sonatas during his lifetime, as well as, two collections of scores with his colleague André Pirro entitled: "Archives of the Masters of the Organ," and "Classical School of the Organ" that chronicled the works of master organist from around the world.
