Son of John and Martha Ann Kirby Godbold, husband of Sarah Ann Graves. John and Sarah were childless as is shown on census records. However the 1880 record shows an adopted son, Charles W. Godbold, age 9.

JOHN GODBOLD PASSES
Another "Boy in Gray" Passes to His Reward. Died in Columbia. The Gray line is Thinning Fast. Funeral at Rose Hill Sunday Afternoon.

MARION - John G. Godbold, Confederate soldier and for many years jailer for the County of Marion, died at the Confederate Infirmary in Columbia, Saturday morning at 6:30 o'clock, after a protracted illness. For several months Mr. Godbold's health had been failing and the end was not unexpected. A few weeks ago he visited his sister, Mrs. Carrie Gibson, of Marion, and suffered a relapse while here, being confined to his bed during his entire visit.

John G. Godbold was 75 years of age at the time of his death, having lived a long and eventful life, most of which was spent in his native county. He was born May 12, 1846. In 1861 he enlisted as a member of the 23rd. SC Regiment of volunteers, in Hagood's Brigade, and served gallantly throughout the Civil War.

The body of the deceased was brought to Marion and buried with appropriate services at Rose Hill Cemetery Sunday afternoon, when a large gathering of people paid a last tribute of respect to him.

Mr. Godbold was a man of tremendous statue and in his young manhood there were few men his equal in strength. His feats of strength have almost become historic in local annals. Another "Boy in Gray" has "passed over the river to rest under the shade of the trees".
