John was the son of Phillip Buzan b 1730 England. Phillip Sr's father was possibly a William b ca 1710. John had three brothers, Jesse, Phillip and William. In the book "Old Kentucky Entries and Deeds" there is listed a Phillip Buzan with 1,000 acres, transaction dated 12 Feb 1784. Next is Phillip Buzan, 500 acres, 16 Dec 1784, and then William Buzan, 1,000 acres, 12 Feb 1784. No cities or counties listed, just the nearest water sources, which were Fox Run, and Clear Creek. Listed on the 1800 Tax census of Bullitt Co KY:

John BUZAN
Philip BUZAN

From the Norfolk VA library, the book "ORIGINAL LISTS OF IMMIGANTS IN BONDAGE FROM LONDON TO THE AMERICAN COLONIES 1719-1744" edit. MARION & JACK KAMINKON. Pg. 25 BUSAN, PHILIP, 65c & BUSAN, WM 65c. Pg 196 shows it was from KENT ENGLAND going to MARYLAND. Ships name was "Vernon", piloted by "CAPT HENRY LEE", number of people was 9, date in board 12/19/1740.

John fought in the Revolutionary War from 10 Oct 1776 to 10 Apr 1778. He fought at the Battle of Brandywine under Gen. Washington, and was discharged at Valley Forge. On pension list of 1818 in Bullitt Co. KY. Probably lived on or near the Monongalia River and PA/VA border area at time of enlistment, as his family is spotted in that area.

John married Rebecca and they had the following children who appear to be born in the 1790s, although the years are guessed at. I'm wondering if there were other younger children from this marriage, or if there was a previous wife and children?

1. Catherine Buzan Gibson ca 1791
2. Joshua Buzan ca 1793
3. Elizabeth Buzan Hollis ca 1795
4. Nancy Buzan Gentry b 1797
5. Rebecca Buzan Wheeler b 1800
6. Phillip Buzan b ca 1803

There is much speculation about where the surname Buzan comes from. The blogger Ronan Lyons goes into great depth as to where it comes from, and indicates that it quite possibly is French Huguenot. There are others who say they came from Spain. This particular spelling seems to come from the south of France, Catalan area, but could have come from Spain originally. Here is the link:

Does anyone know anything about his wife, Rebecca?
