U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Hope College, in 1881, from the law department of the University of Michigan, in 1883, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Holland, Michigan. He was Holland City Attorney, a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1885-91), Mayor of Holland, in 1895 and a member of the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission, (1901-07). In 1907, he was as a Republican to the Sixtieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Alden Smith and reelected to the Sixty-first Congress, serving until 1911. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was appointed by President Hoover United States Minister to the Netherlands, in 1929, serving until his death at age 71.
