John T Shane was the son of George Shane and Mary Tuttle, one of six children. His father died in 1852 and his mother in 1833. After the death of his mother, John was placed in the family of Hiram Hughes, where he remained until he was 15 years of age. He then went to Brownsville where he was employed on a farm and later upon the pikes in that vicinity. In 1840 he went to Beaver, Pennsylvania, in 1844 to Steubenville, Ohio, and in 1845 came to Henry County, Iowa.

On 24 Sept 1846 in Henry County, Iowa, John married Margaret Jack, daughter of Milton H Jack and Elizabeth Smith. Margaret's parents died in 1826 and 1827 and she came to Henry County in 1841 with an uncle, John Tolle. The fathers of both Margaret and John Shane were in the War of 1812. Margaret and James had 8 children (1900 Census). Known children: George Milton Shane, Sarah Juline (Crable), Margaret Ellen (Ritchie), John William Shane, and Phillip E Shane.

John was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Mount Pleasant when he enlisted as a Private on 10 Nov 1861 at the age of 36 years. He mustered in Co C 4th Iowa Cavalry on 25 Nov 1861 at Camp Harlan. Re-enlisted and re-mustered 30 Dec 1863. Discharged for chronic hepatitis 15 Jul 1864 from hospital at Keokuk, Iowa. John applied for his pension on Mar 3, 1883. His application is #533.988 and his certificate #372.018. His wife later applied for her widow's pension on 18 Oct 1906. Her application is #857.041, and her certificate #622.449.

John died in 1906 at the age of 81 years.
