Deputy David Dawson was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to assist another officer. His vehicle left the road on Highway 903 near Crowfoot Road, crossing over the road and striking a tree.
Deputy Dawson had served with Greene County Sheriff's Office since June 1.

David Jennings Dawson III, 21, of La Grange, passed away Monday, August 1, 2011. Jennings was a member of White Oak Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church and cherished his relationship with the Lord. Jennings graduated from North Lenoir High School in 2008. He furthered his education at Lenoir Community College where he earned degrees in Criminal Justice and Basic Law Enforcement Training. Jennings began working with the Greene County Sheriff's Department in June of 2011. Jennings was an Eagle Scout recipient. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, bowling and most of all cherished time spent with family and friends.
A service of remembrance will be held Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 6 p.m. from the North Lenoir High School Auditorium with Rev. Bob Smith officiating.
Jennings is survived by his father and step-mother, David Jennings Dawson, Jr. and Carla Dawson of La Grange; mother, Kay Stanley Dawson of Kinston; his brother whom he enjoyed mentoring and spending time with, Robert David "Rob" Dawson; paternal grandparents, Grace Dawson of La Grange, R.L. and Sylvia Nethercutt of Snow Hill; maternal grandparents, Clayro Stanley of Grimesland and Kenneth L. Epps of La Grange. Jennings was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, David Jennings Dawson, Sr.; and maternal grandmother, Ann Taylor Epps.
