FLORENCE — Dr. Thompson Price Hoffmeyer, 85, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, after an illness. Born in Florence County, he was the son of the late William Julius and Marguerite Hamer Hoffmeyer.
He was a graduate of Florence High School and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in veterinary medicine. He established Hoffmeyer Animal Hospital where he practiced until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the American and S.C. Veterinarian Medical Associations.

Dr. Hoffmeyer was a lifelong member of Pisgah United Methodist Church having served as church lay leader and in other capacities. He was a 50-year member of the Florence Rotary Club and was a recipient of the Paul Harris award. He enjoyed volunteering at the Manna House and ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.

His retirement centered around his family. He was especially devoted to his two grandsons, Price and John. He could often be seen in the yard on his tractor with one of his grandsons.

Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Margaret Hewitt Hoffmeyer; daughters, Margaret H. Hoffmeyer, MD, and Johanna H. Gibson; sons, Thompson P. Hoffmeyer Jr., CPA, and W. James Hoffmeyer; two grandsons, Price Toland Gibson and John William Gibson; and a brother, William J. Hoffmeyer, all of Florence.

A service of celebration will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Pisgah United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Pisgah United Methodist Church, The Manna House or Florence Area Humane Society.
