Folk Figure. He was the father of Goodwill Ambassador Samantha Smith, a 10 year old girl from Auburn, Maine, who became famous overnight. In 1983 Samantha wrote a letter to Soviet Premier Yuri Andropov regarding her concerns about nuclear war. She was concerned that Russia was planning to attack the United States. The Premier wrote back and informed Samantha that he had no intentions of doing so and instead invited her and her family to come for a tour off the USSR, which she did on July 7, 1983. After her journey to the USSR she received numerous film and television offers, appearing with Robert Urich, in the television series, "Lime Street." On August 25, 1985, Samantha and her father, Arthur were killed in a plane crash. After Samantha's death the USSR issued a stamp in her memory, but Andropov did not see it, he died in 1984. After Samantha and her father's death, they were cremated, but later buried in Estabrook Cemetery, in Amity, Maine, near Houlton, Maine.
