Stephen J. Allen married Mary Frum on December 29, 1859 in Harrison county, Virginia. (WV in 1863)

They established their first home on a farm in Doddridge county, then moved to Harrison county in 1874, to Braxton county in 1880, and later to Webster county, where Stephen continued farming until his death.

He was a Republican and one of the first school commissioners in Doddridge county after the state was separated from Virginia, holding the office of township treasurer at the same time.

Mary and Stephen raised 8 children. They were members of the Missionary Baptist Church where he served as deacon and clerk.
