The son of George deKay, a sea captain, and Catherine Coleman. Brother of Commodore George Coleman DeKay. He married Janet Eckford 31 July 1831. He graduated as a physician from Edinburgh University, Scotland, in 1819. He had a strong interest in the natural sciences and was a founder of the Lyceum of Natural History.

Nov. 21.--In Oyster Bay, Long Island, Dr. James E. De Kay, aged 59. He was educated as a physician, but devoted himself from his early years to Natural History, and in the State Survey of New York the department of Zoology was assigned to him.
