9th Alabama Governor. He served as the Governor of Alabama in from July to November 1837, having been elevated to the seat from his position as Alabama State Legislature Speaker of the House when Governor Clement Comer Clay was appointed as a United States Senator. He relinquished the office when Arthur P. Bagby was elected Alabama Governor in November 1837.
