Gerald F. Hutchins Obituary

Gerald F. "Hap" Hutchins went to be with the Lord on Dec. 30, 2008, at his home with his loving wife by his side. He was a devoted husband and father.

Hap was born on Sept. 2, 1924, in North Danville on the Morrill Farm. He was the son of the late Harley and Alice (Archambault) Hutchins. He attended school at the Morrill Schoolhouse in North Danville.

On Feb. 28, 1945, he joined the US Army at the age of 19. Hap served his country during WWII in the 524th Military Police stationed in Austria and Germany. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 10, 1946, and was in the reserves for three years.

On Dec. 11, 1949, he married Betty Bumps, who, for the next 59 years, was the love of his life. They had two children, Barbara and Brent, who meant the world to him.

Hap bought the Lemus farm from his folks in 1947. While farming, he started driving school bus in the fall of 1956. Hap owned and operated the busses until 1971. They sold the farm in 1966 and moved to North Danville village; Hap then worked nights at the Fairbanks Foundry and later five years for the St. Johnsbury Highway Department.

In the fall of 1973, he contracted for the Danville School District and stopped driving students after his heart attack in 1992. He did continue to oversee the busses until his retirement. After his retirement, he was proud of his garden, but, most of all, he loved spending time with his devoted family. Hap and his family had a lot of fun family time at their camp on Coles Pond.

Hap was predeceased by his parents Harley and Alice Hutchins; two sisters, Neomia (Hutchins) McGill and Ramona (Hutchins) Flint; three brothers, Jack Craig, Earl Hutchins, and Harold Hutchins; brothers-in-law Robert Bumps and Henry Bumps; and many close friends.

He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver Betty; his two children, Barbara Hutchins Fontaine and husband Gary of Danville, and Brent Hutchins and wife Cyndy of Monroe, N.H.; one sister Ruby Hutchins Goslant of St. Johnsbury; sister-in-law Frances Craig of Post Mills; several nieces and nephews; Betty's sisters, Norma Sargent of Wells River, Ruby Whitney and husband George of Hardwick, Barbara Heath and husband James of Waterford; and Betty's half brother Raymond Bumps.

Memorial services will be held this Friday, May 22, 2009, at noon at the Danville Green Cemetery. The Rev. Robert H. Sargent will officiate with military honors to be conducted by American Legion Post #53 of Danville. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome.

Memorial contributions could be directed to Danville Rescue Squad, Danville VT 05828.

Memories and condolences may be shared privately at www.saylesfh.com. Sayles Funeral Home is located at 525 Summer St. in St. Johnsbury.
