MONTROSE - Edna Mae King, age 86, of Montrose, died early Thursday morning, Sept.11, 2003, at Carla's Assisted Living in Montrose.

Edna Mae Snoke was born on May 29, 1917, in Montrose to Elmer and Luella Snoke. At that time her parents were homesteading in the Big Cimarron area. When she was 3 weeks old, she was taken to the homestead in a horse-drawn wagon. Her parents also operated Snoke's Bakeries in Montrose, Silverton, Gunnison, and Olathe.

After graduation from Montrose County High School in 1935, Edna Mae attended Blair Business College in Colorado Springs. In 1936 Edna Mae was chosen as Miss Montrose County and was awarded a 15-day vacation trip to the Atlantic seaboard, New York City, and New Orleans. She had fond memories of the trip but was always amazed that "a shy young lady" won.

In 1938 she married A. Leroy "Son" King. They shared 60 years together. Their daughter, Donna Rae, was born while they were living in Delta. Judy Ann was born in Montrose. While in Montrose, Son was associated with Own Produce in Grand Junction. They remained there until moving back to Montrose in 1993 to be closer to their children and Blue Mesa Lake. They spent several years enjoying their summer home at Blue Mesa Ranch.

Edna Mae was a fulltime homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the focus of her life. Since her grandchildren called her Granny, that became the common name for her with her family and many of her friends. Her hobbies included gardening, golf, bridge, pressing flowers, and being a Denver Bronco fan.

Survivors included her two daughters: Donna Rae Granere, and Judy Ann and husband Ralph Files, all of Montrose, Colo.; grandchildren Teri Ann (Granere) and husband Trevor Harrison, of Montrose, Colo.; Brent Granere, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Craig Files and Wife Hilary, of Fort Collins, Colo.; Christina Files and Pattie Hansen, Los Alamos, N.M.; and great-grandchildren: Marina Granere, and Triston and Treyton Harrison.

Edna Mae was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her half brother, James Full, and her son-in-law, Gary Granere.

A graveside service will be held in Cedar Cemetery at Montrose where she will be placed with her husband and near her parents and other family members. Dr. Jerry Overton will lead the service on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m.

Edna Mae requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the charitable organization of the giver's choice. Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home, (970) 249-4400.
