• Darlene Dains Gaskill, 84, a resident of Shoshone, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2011, at her home in Shoshone.
Darlene was born in Elmira, Kan., the only daughter of seven children born to Asa and Dora Dains. At age 15, due to the Depression and Dust Bowl, the family piled what they owned in their truck and moved to Gooding, Idaho. Darlene met her future husband, Robert Gaskill, after he returned home from serving in World War II and she had returned from working for the military in Point Loma, Calif. They farmed in Fairfield, Idaho, moved to Gooding and finally settled in Shoshone in 1960.
Darlene did whatever she set her mind to. Over the years, she had many occupations — waitressing, painting billboard signs, teaching art, picking night crawlers and as editor of two newspapers (The Lincoln County Journal and The Renegade). Her final undertaking was buying and running The Eagle's Nest Bar and Grill in Dietrich for 20 years.
Darlene is preceded in death by her six brothers, Jess, Don, Gabe, Wylie, Rusty and Jack; her parents, Asa and Dora Dains; and two sons, Chad and Bob. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert; three children, Lytle of Dietrich, Jay (Lori) of Lewiston and Shirley (William) of Dietrich. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, including Asa, a very special granddaughter, and Francie, a very special niece — thank you, Francie, for all you have done!
There will be a graveside service at the Shoshone Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, with a gathering afterwards at The Eagle's Nest in Dietrich. Please join us and share your memories of Darlene — of which there are plenty!
