James Luther Jones was born about 1911 or 1912 (see note below) in Bremond, Robertson County, Texas, to Mary Elizabeth (Dotson) and Luther L. Jones. J.L. went to work in the oil fields in south Texas after he got out of school. His first marriage was to Pauline Bailey. He continued to work in the oil field with ranching as a sideline job. J.L. and Pauline had one child, James Darwin Jones. They divorced in the 1950's.

J.L. then married Allie Mae "Missy" Hall. They had no children. J.L. ranched and Missy had a large fruit orchard, mostly growing peaches but a few other fruits as well.
J.L. passed away on July 13, 2003, and was buried at the Suggs Cemetery, Blackjack, Robertson Co., TX, according to family records.
