"Wallace, Jas. Dudley, a veteran of two wars; served with distinction in Mexican war; wounded at battle of Palo Alto, and again at the storming of Monterey; at first call for men for civil war, recruited co. A, 12th O.V.I. com. capt.; e. with same for 3 years, mustering June 19, 1861; pro. major for gallantry at Carnifex Ferry battle, com. bearing date of battle, Sept. 10, 1861; treated for inflammantory sore throat at American House, Gallipolis, in Aug. 1861; in hosp. at Charleston; again at Gallipolis, typhoid fever; dis. by s.o. Army of W. Va. early in spring of 1862, disab.; over 2 years confined to his bed, and died April 15, 1886, at his home in Morrow, of disease contracted in service, aged 63 years 4 months 6 days."
