Architect. Smith was an architect in and around Philadelphia. He laid the plans for a number of churches in Philadelphia, Nassau Hall in Princeton, Benjamin Franklin's house, Carpenters' Hall, the Walnut Street Prison and the Continental Army barracks in Billingsport among other buildings. He also designed the obstructions, known as chevaux-de-frise, which were placed in the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War to impede British navigation of the river.
