Johann Friedrich Mundhenke was born on 14 June 1793 in Hagen, Pyrmont (presently a district of Bad Pyrmont, Germany), a son of Johann Friedrich Mundhenke and Anna Margaretha Henriette Meinert. He was known as "Friedrich".

He relocated from Hagen to Schieder, Lippe about 1823. In 1824, he purchased the Wennemann farmstead (Number 25) in Schieder, also known as Fischanger ("Fishyard" in English), so named due to its location on the south bank of the Emmer River and the abundance of fish.

In addition to being a farmer, he was a collector of road usage tax, as Fischanger served a dual function as a tollhouse, being situated at what was then the border of the former Principality of Lippe and the former Kingdom of Prussia, near Harzberg.

In April 1847, he announced his intention to sell Fischanger and leave for America. He emigrated to the United States of America with his second wife and children in May 1847.

In America, he was called "Frederick".

He was an early settler of Rock Run, Stephenson County, Illinois, by 5 October 1847, where he farmed.

Frederick Mundhenke (as "Frederic Mundhenkie") purchased 59.8 acres of public land in Stephenson County on 7 June 1849 for $4.50 per acre (northeastern portion of Section 16 in Rock Run Township on present-day North Eggert Road at 42.43129134967303, -89.46035901885088 on the north bank of Rock Run).

Following the death of his second wife in 1872, he settled in Nebraska with his son, Friedrich Mundhenke.

With advancing age, he was no longer able to manage his own affairs, and his son Friedrich was appointed his guardian on 26 December 1874.

Frederick Mundhenke died in Precinct J, Seward County, Nebraska on 23 February 1876.
