Edward "LeRoy" Yerxa, 64, (also known as, Ashoka Nasraddin) passed away in his sleep on Sunday, November 3, 2002. LeRoy was born on November 7, 1937, in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, the son of Frances (Ferris) and Leroy Arnold Yerxa. His father, Leroy, passed away when Edward was only eight years old.

"LeRoy" served in the US Army from 1958 to 1962.

He then moved to Chicago, IL; where he worked with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in its early years. He then moved to San Francisco, CA; and became a disciple of Murshid Sam Lewis. LeRoy sang, recorded and toured with the Sufi Choir of California, who were a favorite with Governor Gary Brown.

He moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1976 and worked as a builder.

LeRoy married Katherine Louise Shane in 1978. He became a father in 1981 and worked hard to raise his son, Jeremiah; whom he felt was his greatest accomplishment.

LeRoy attended Santa Fe Community College and finished his degree as a Chef. He enjoyed working as a Banquet Chef at Quail Run, and later at the La Fonda Hotel.

LeRoy loved to sing, was a great storyteller, a devoted father, kind neighbor and good friend. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his son, Jeremiah; his mother, Frances (Ferris) Yerxa-Hamling; sisters: Kay Housh (husband Joe) and Carol Aby (husband Jack), and brother, Richard Yerxa; half-sister, Debbie Ball (husband Bob); and half-brother, Billy Hamling.
