James Lee Johnson, age 67, retired colonel with the US Army Reserve and retired physician died early Wednesday morning at his home, 1556 Johnson Road, Lewisburg. Graveside services will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock at Lone Oak Cemetery with full military honors. A native of Lewisburg he was the son of the late Leslie B. and Medie Austin Johnson. Always an honor student his steps up the educational ladder were easily obtained. After his graduation from Marshall County High School in 1950 his pursuit of a career in medicine began. He had two years Pre-medicine at Middle Tennessee 3tate University, Murfreesboro, four years of medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and after one year internship at Methodist hospital in Memphis he took a 9 month post graduate course in Abnormal Psychology at the University of Tennessee Extension, Knoxville. He opened his general practice in 1959 and moved to his hometown to open his office in 1971. Following his retirement from private practice in 1989, he accepted the position as Industrial Medicine Medical Director for Inter-City Products and served in that capacity until 1995. Other areas where he practiced were the VA Hospital in Murfreesboro, United Mine Workers Clinic in Jasper, Alabama and Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport. In addition to providing all aspects of general medicine, pediatrics, major and minor surgery, obstetrics and preventive medicine, he provided emergency coverage to the local hospital emergency room and inpatients as well as local extended care facilities and served on both the UR Committees for the hospital and extended care facilities here for over 15 years.

It was in Murfreesboro when his interest in the military began when he took Basic ROTC at MTSU. He advanced from the rank of Captain to Colonel in the 22 years he served. He had active duty with the USPHS (Federal Employee Health Branch) in Washington, D.C. and also served in the U.S. Army from 1990-1991. During the time he was not on active duty, he was the Armored Battalion Medical Officer with the Tennessee National Guard, General Medical Officer for the Alabama National Guard, 109 Evacuation Hospital in Birmingham, served with the Control Group and was Ready Reserve Camp Surgeon for the 401st MP Camp P.W. Decorations and badges Col. Johnson earned were the Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Medal, Sharp Shooter and Carbine. Survivors include his wife, Donna C. Johnson of Lewisburg; three daughters, Cindy Peden of Franklin, Suzi Johnson of LaVergne, and Susanne Jolley of Cornersville; one son, Ben Johnson of Lewisburg; two sisters, Charlene Moore of Prospect and Claudia McNatt of Shelbyville; two brothers, Buddy Johnson of Prospect and Ralph Johnson of Pulaski; and four grandchildren, Carolanne and Mary Jolley and Lee and Kayla Johnson.
The family will be at the funeral home Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and again from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for visitation. Bills-McGaugh & Floyd Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
