The second son of Bernard & Bridget (Quigley) Slavin, he was named for Bridget’s father William Quigley. William worked for the New York Central Railroad starting in the Mott Haven yard at age 21 and retiring as an engineer after 52 years in December of 1937. His long career was documented in the Tarrytown Daily News published on July 31, 1935. He married Jane Edmonds on May 12, 1862 at St. Teresa's Church is what is now Sleepy Hollow, NY. After Jane's death, he married Anne Tunney Salter, a widow, born in Donegal Ireland, whose mother was Margaret Slavin. William was living with his niece Helen Slavin Nelson, the daughter of his younger brother Bernard, when he died of diabetes and kidney disease on March 14, 1939. He was the last living sibling. He was buried with his first wife Jenny in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
