Since the beginning the 1960s Schäfer was a constant member of the Deutscher Fernsehfunk (state television in East Germany). In the role of Maxe Baumann, Schäfer became famos and popular to his audience beside Co-Partners Helga Hahnemann, Margot Ebert and Rolf Herricht. Also for many years he was moderate the popular Television program ^Der Wunschbiefkasten^. Gerd E. Schäfer and Actor Günter Pfitzmann were schoolfriends.
