Michael was born in Ossining, New York and his family later moved to Peekskill, where he graduated from the Lakeland High School of Shrub Oak in 1965.
He enlisted in the Marines 5 February 1965, at the New York Recruiting Office and took his basic boot camp training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Michael was with the Platoon 114, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion during his boot camp training.
After arriving in Vietnam Michael was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Michael was wounded by hostile mortar fire, at Hill 55 south of Danang. Later he died as a result of small arms fire during combat operation, at Phu An Village,
about 2 kilometers southeast of Con Thien.
Michael served his country for 2 years and was single.
Survived by his parents, Orlando J and Rosemarie Amato and a brother, Daniel J Amato.
