ELIZABETH WEST YORK
RALEIGH -- Elizabeth "Lib" York, 78, passed away peacefully at home following a valiant battle with cancer on Saturday, August 14. She was a loving wife and mother and a devoted and revered member of the Raleigh community.
Lib York was born on April 6, 1921 in the small farming town of West Point, Miss. Her business school education, necessitated by the economic realities of the Great Depression, evoked a lifelong quest for knowlege of the arts, horticulture and world travel.
Lib moved to Raleigh in 1949 and married Willie York in 1962. In 1975, she became a docent at the North Carolina Museum of Art. She was extraordinary in the range of her commitments to the museum, including 23 years as a Docent, President of the Docent Organization in 1985 and a member of the Museum Travel Committee for 10 years. She enlightened many school children with her artistic knowledge and philosphy of life during those 23 years.
Since 1987, Lib York was an active member of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society serving as its President in 1992. She also served as a docent at the Governor's Mansion beginning in 1992 and was awarded the title Docent Emeritus.
In May 1999, supporters of the JC Raulston Arboretum honored Lib and Willie's many years of dedication to the Arboretum. Lib had served on the Board of Directors since 1994. She and husband Willie co-chaired the 1996 Arboretum Gala and were honorary co-chairs of the 1999 Arboretum Gala.
Lib was a member of St. Michael's Church where she enjoyed participation in bible study.
Lib is survived by husband, J.W. "Willie" York; children, Cynthia York Turner and husband, David of Wilmington, Philip Scott York and wife, Louise of Raleigh, Phyllis York Brookshire and husband, Don of Raleigh, William McDonnell York of Raleigh; step-children, James Wesley York Jr. and wife, Betty of Chapel Hill, George Smedes York and wife, Rosemary of Raleigh, Charles Vance York II of Raleigh, Mary Poyner York Murray and husband, Matt of Charlottesville, Va.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Leigh Logsdon of Amarillo, Texas, Cora Mae Wray of Pearl River, La; preceded in death by Janie Catherine West.
