Gates Johnson marries Francis Parker in Wheeling, Cook, Illinois
In October 1856, Gates Johnson came to Wheeling and married 19 year old Francis Parker. Gates journeyed down the Mississippi from St. Paul, by rail to Chicago and by horse and buggy to Wheeling. It's obvious from his diary entries that he knew Frances and her "folks" well and also knew people in Chicago, evidence he must have spent time there after working on the Great Western Railway of Canada. Frances and Gates possibly met through the Presbyterian Church.
