George Blackwell SMITH Jr., 76, known as "Blackie," died Monday, May 28, 2007, at home after a long illness.
Blackie was preceded in death by his parents, Emily Jameson MILLER Smith and George Blackwell SMITH. He also was preceded in death by his brother 2nd Lt. G.H. Miller SMITH who is buried in St. Avold, France.
Blackie's survivors are his wife of 54 years, Margaret PATTEN Smith; his children, George Blackwell SMITH III and Dana, Marghee SMITH Welch and Charles, Patten Miller SMITH and Lloyd. His grandchildren, George Blackwell "Blacky" SMITH IV and his fiancée, Kelly Stephens, Lukas Baird SMITH, Dawson Kilby SMITH and Patten Miller SMITH Jr. He is also survived by his sister, Upshur SMITH Puckette and many devoted nieces and nephews.
Blackie was a native of Chattanooga. He attended McCallie School and graduated from Choate School in Wallingford, Conn. He graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
Blackie was very active in his church, Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain, serving as a Sunday school teacher and as senior warden of the Vestry.
He was active civically and was a pioneer of downtown development. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1969. Blackie served on many boards and was a trustee of Girls Preparatory School and McCaliie School.
He had three careers. First with Miller Bros. Co. where he was vice president, and when it sold he became a commercial real estate broker with Fidelity Trust. His last career was as a farmer on his beloved farm, until he had a stroke in 2000.
Blackie was a geography buff and had, with his wife, visited every state in the union and every continent except Antarctica.
The celebration of his life will be at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 6.
Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
The visitation will be at Wann Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, June 5.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to McCallie School; the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain; The Metropolitan Episcopal Ministry; Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation; and Hospice of Chattanooga.

Inscription

The name on the marker shows "Jr" when it should be "III". The father (1895-1985) of "III" is "Jr" and is buried in the same Forest Hills cemetery.
