Life-long Steinhatchee fixture Joseph Keith Stewart, known as "Butch" to his family and "Piccolo" to his friends, suffered a heart attack and died on Saturday, June 4, 2011. Piccolo was 60 years old.
He graduated from Dixie County High School in 1968 and became a commercial fisherman before becoming medically disabled. He enjoyed whittling and crafting, making arrowheads.
He is survived by daughters Olivia Savage of England, Evie Stewart, and Meriah Stewart both of Steinhatchee; sister, Joyce Hart of Steinhatchee; brother, Leonard Stewart of Nokomis; two grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A viewing will be held at Rick Gooding Funeral Home in Cross City on Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service to inter his ashes will be held at the Mount Olive Cemetery in Steinhatchee on Sunday, June 12, 2011, at 3 p.m. Immediately after the memorial service there will be a pot-luck reception across the river at the Steinhatchee Community Center. The family encourages you to come and bring stories and photos of Piccolo to share with everyone.
