Martin Luther Horn was the son of Gilman Horn and Polly Colby. His mother died in 1847 in Putnam County, Indiana, and his father married Zelpha Dilworth in 1850. His mother and father died in Putnam County, Indiana.

Martin was living in Poweshiek County, Iowa, in 1860, working as a hired man with the Kent family.

At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in Poweshiek County on 25 Sep 1861 at the age of 23 years. Mustered in Co E 4th Iowa Cavalry on 23 Nov 1861. Re-enlisted and re-mustered on 14 Dec 1863. Mustered out with Co E on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

Martin married Susan Elwood, daughter of Robert Elwood, in Jasper County, Iowa, on 1 Jan 1866. They had the following (known) children: Libbie, Robert, Edna, Mertie, Callie, and Aaron.

Susan died 13 Jan 1897 in Marion County, Iowa.
