A heart attack suffered yesterday en route to Charleston from a business trip took the life of one of the city's widely known criminal and civil attorneys.
Woodville C. Haythe, 50, 5014-A Venable Ave., died yesterday at 12:30 p.m. in Holzer Hospital, Gallipolis, OH. He was returning to Charleston from Warren, OH. Following the seizure, Mr. Haythe was able to drive to the hospital, give an attendant his name, age, address and the name of his wife. He requested she be notified and then died as the hospital admission slip was being completed.
Dr. J. E. Roberts of Charleston, who accompanied Mrs. Jean Haythe to Gallipolis, said Haythe had suffered a mild coronary thrombosis a year ago.
Mr. Haythe, an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination as attorney general in 1932, was born in Hinton, June 4, 1905, son of the late Woodville Vincent and Cora Lee Mitchell Haythe. He was educated in Summers County schools, attended Concord State Teachers College, Washington and Lee University, the University of Alabama and was graduated from West Virginia School of Law.
He was elected from Summers County to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1934 for one term and served in the capacity of supervisor of gross sales tax for the State Tax Commission. During World War II he served two tours of duty with the U. S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific and Far East theaters and was discharged with the rank of major. After his discharge he was instrumental in the organization of the first Marine Corps League in Charleston.
He was a member of the Baptist Temple, American Legion, Lambda Chi Alpha, Theta Nu Epsilon, Phi Gamma Mu, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Charleston and American Bar Associations.
He is survived only by his wife.
The body is at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. from the funeral home, the Rev. Kyle Haselden officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
