LaRue County Herald, Thurs., Aug 19, 1897:
Douglas Allen and Miss Mattie DeSpain were married at the home of Mrs. George Ann DeSpain of Taylor County on August 15. Mattie was a daughter of Jesse D. DeSpain (1855-1890) and George Ann Price (1857-1895) Their death place was given as Attilla, Kentucky. Jesse DeSpain was shot and killed by James Ellet Perkins, after a fight near the LaRue-Taylor County line.

In the 1910 Marion County Census, Douglas Allen was 31 and married 11 years to Mattie, age 26. They had no children.

In the 1930 LaRue County Census, Buffalo District, Douglas Allen was family 80. He gave his age as 53. His wife, Mattie, was listed as 43. They had no children in the home.

From the Lebanon Enterprise, Sep 20, 1946:
William Douglas Allen, 70, died Sunday afternoon at the home of his brother, Elijah Allen, near Raywick. Death was due to complications.
Mr. Allen was a native of this county, born on May 20, 1876, and had resided here all his life. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Mattie DeSpain, who survives him. The one brother and a sister, Mrs. Annie Price, both of the county, also survive. Two brothers, Dave and James Allen, are deceased.
Burial was on Monday afternoon in the family burying ground near the home. There were no funeral services.

After William Douglas died, Mattie married again to a Mr. Caulfield. and moved to Illinois. She died at Springfield, Illinois on 23 Dec 1977. She was reportedly buried in the Virden Cemetery.
Her obituary: Mrs. Mattie DeSpain Caufield,l 96, of 104 N. Stephens Ave., died at 7:15 am Friday at Rutledge Manor Care Home. Born in 1881 in Campbellsville, Kentucky she was the daughter of Jesse and George Ann DeSpain. She lived in Virden for several years, and was a resident of Springfield for the past 17. Several Nieces and Nephews survive. Service will be 10:30 am Tuesday at the Berry Funeral Home in Virden, with the Rev. Donald Mann officiating. Burial will be inb Virden Cemetery.
