US Congressman. Elected to represent Illinois's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1867 to 1871. Also served as a Member of the Illinois State Senate in 1844, 1855 to 1859, Delegate to Republican National Convention from Illinois in 1856, and United States Minister to Prussia from 1861 to 1865.
