Confederate soldier, North Carolina, 2nd Regiment, Company C
He was interred on July 30th, so most likely died the previous day, but his CSR states that he died on Aug. 2nd. His wife filed for an 1885 NC pension, and she gave the date as July 4th, 1862.

This monument was erected to commemorate Ruel Sidney Jones and thousands of his Confederate brothers-at-arms. Hollywood's 90-foot high granite pyramid was built four years after the fall of the South, in 1869, as a memorial to the more than 18,000 enlisted men of the Confederate Army buried all around in this cemetery.

Cemetery records state that Confederate soldier Ruel Sidney Jones of the 2nd North Carolina Regiment, Company C, born 1843, died 7/29/1862, is interred in Soldiers Section Q, grave 272. The marker in the foreground is to denote a row of graves, this block stating graves 271 through 283, and you can see there are no markers in that row save one, that of Daniel D. Stanford at row's end, in grave 283. Near the fall of Richmond, casualties were brought to Richmond by train and cart. Burials were hasty and marked not by name but by numbered wooden boards which each represent a row of burials, later replaced with granite blocks. The only markers that name these individual soldiers, and exist today, are markers that were placed at a later date by descendants. In the case of Ruel Sidney Jones, no marker has been placed. If you are a descendant, you might consider requesting a marker be placed. Call Hollywood Cemetery, or the Veteran's Administration at 1-800-827-1000, for further info.
