The marriage bond for his first wife Sarah Utley was issued on Aug 31, 1854 in Orange Co, NC. The marriage bond for his second wife, Susan, and sibling of Sarah was issued on Dec 12, 1857 in Franklin Co, NC. He pastored in Cumberland, Rowan and Wake Co, NC. In 1880 he was living in Wake Co.

Rev. Skidmore had been sent as Pastor to Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church, South in Winston-Salem. One of the most influential Churches in the South. He served only one year, dying of a Heart Attack while attending Annual Conference in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Either through his interest, or in honor of his ministry, Burkhead United Methodist Church thrives today in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
