Robert married Elizabeth "Eliza" Barringer McComb and they are the parents of Benjamin W, Samuel M, William P, Alice B, Mary V and Frances "Fannie" Bright Davidson.
He supported his family as a merchant in Mecklenburg county, NC for a number of years. This couple placed their son, William, in the asylum in Raleigh before moving to Florida with most of their other children. When the new Western NC asylum opened, William transferred there and remained there for the rest of his life.
Eliza died soon after the move to Florida. He would die a few years later.
